Fort Worth settles with Atatiana Jefferson's family

Catch up quick: A jury found former Fort Worth officer Aaron Dean guilty of manslaughter in 2022, making him the first officer in Tarrant County convicted in an on-duty shooting. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

• Jefferson's family also filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Dean and the city.

The latest: The Fort Worth City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve the settlement with Jefferson's family. A probate court will need to approve the settlement for it to take effect, per the city.

• In a statement, Mayor Mattie Parker acknowledged the "profound and unimaginable loss" that Jefferson's loved ones experienced after her killing.
• "While no settlement can undo the devastating impact of this tragedy, we hope this agreement offers a meaningful measure of closure and allows everyone to move forward," Parker said.

How it works: The money will be divided among Jefferson's surviving family members. Her two nephews will receive a larger share of the settlement, but the money will be kept in a trust until they turn 18.

• One of the nephews, Zion Carr, was playing video games with Jefferson the night Dean shot her through her window. He was 8 years old at the time.

What they're saying: "For us, accountability has never been about a single verdict, sentence, or settlement. It has always been about ensuring that Atatiana's life mattered, that what happened to her was acknowledged, and that her life was remembered," Jefferson's sister, Ashley Carr, said in a statement.

What they're doing: Jefferson's family and friends formed the Atatiana Project after her death to fund educational opportunities for children from communities with fewer resources.

• They are planning a community festival in October to honor her life.
