By the numbers: North Texans with a mortgage now pay about 45% more per month than renters, LendingTree researchers found.
- The median monthly gross rent was nearly $1,718 in 2024, based on the latest available Census Bureau data, compared to $2,491 a month for mortgaged homes.
- That's a $773 difference after factoring in utilities, fees and taxes for both groups.
What they're saying: "The cost disparity here could be enough to convince someone that they'll never be able to own a home in some areas, and — unfortunately — they may be right," Matt Schulz, LendingTree's chief consumer finance analyst, said in a statement.
Yes, but: Schulz says there's no "right or wrong answer" for renting versus owning. The decision may come down to a household's budget, lifestyle and financial goals.
