The latest: AT&T will consolidate all of its North Texas offices into a 54-acre global headquarters off Legacy Drive in Plano. The company has over 10,000 employees across North Texas, per the Dallas Regional Chamber.
- The company plans to partially occupy the new campus by late 2028, CEO John Stankey said Monday in an email to employees.
Catch up quick: AT&T was based in downtown San Antonio for about 16 years before moving to downtown Dallas in 2008.
- The company spent $100 million to turn its current headquarters, spanning across four downtown Dallas buildings, into an entertainment district for the public.
- Open since 2021, the AT&T Discovery District has a two-story food hall, lawn seating and a multi-story outdoor screen that can live-stream games. AT&T Performing Arts Center is just a mile away.
Between the lines: Dallas leaders wanted AT&T to stay in the city, but the company's decision to move elsewhere came down to space.
- "As we worked to retain AT&T, it became clear that its current leaders preferred a large horizontal, suburban-style campus rather than the skyscrapers that define our city center," Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said in a statement.
What they're saying: AT&T's new headquarters will bring "fresh momentum" and more innovation to Plano's Legacy district, Mayor John Muns said in a statement.
- Dozens of companies, including PepsiCo and FedEx, have offices in the area.
What's next: AT&T owns three buildings in downtown and is leasing a fourth building through 2031. The company declined to say whether it will sell or keep the buildings.
