AT&T is the top-ranked Fortune 500 company in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Driving the news: Texas has 54 companies on the 2025 Fortune 500 list, falling behind California's 58.
The Fortune list, out yesterday, ranks the largest U.S. companies by revenue. Last year, Fortune 500 companies combined to earn $1.87 trillion.
Zoom in: Dallas-based companies AT&T and Energy Transfer were the top-ranked businesses on this year's list, but both dropped rank compared to last year's list.
AT&T fell five spots to 37 and Energy Transfer fell two spots to 53.
The intrigue: Several D-FW businesses rose in the rankings, including Fort Worth-based American Airlines which climbed five spots to 81.
Dallas-based Southwest Airlines rose three spots to 156.
Irving-based energy company Vistra rose 42 spots to 241.
