Pravdafest brings Chicago indie music marathon to Fitzgerald's

What they're saying: "We're bringing both brand new artists and tried and true classics," Pravda owner Kenny Goodman tells Axios.

Zoom out: Goodman has released more than 200 records from more than 70 artists on Pravda Records since 1984. Some of his bands include the New Duncan Imperials, Smoking Popes and the Flat Five.

• "Those early Pravda records helped shape my understanding of what was going on in Chicago, listening to bands like the Slugs and the Service. I also bought a bunch of CDs at the record store," current WXRT DJ James VanOsdol said in a release.

Zoom in: The music fest will take place at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn and feature Jon Langford, The Effigies, The Handcuffs, the Josh Caterer Trio and Nicholas Tremulis and the Prodigals.

• Goodman also added Annoyance Theater co-founders and renowned mentalists Mick Napier and Jennifer Estlin to the bill. WXRT DJs Marty Lennartz and VanOsdol will emcee, and BabyGold BBQ will handle the food.

• The festivities begin at noon Saturday with vinyl DJ sets. Tickets start at $50.

The bottom line: If you want to celebrate Chicago's indie music scene, Pravdafest is a great place to start.

• "I feel lucky that the label continues to put out great music by great artists. That music brings people joy, which is no small thing in today's world," Goodman says.
