Eddie Volkman isn't ready to sign off after 40 years on Chicago radio

The latest: Volkman announced he was laid off from his job as morning show host at Connoisseur Media's 96.7 FM in the south suburbs.

• "I am another unfortunate casualty of the radio industry," Volkman wrote on social media.

Context: A morning host at a small suburban music station doesn't usually make news, but Volkman is much bigger than his latest gig.

• He was one half of one of the most successful FM radio duos in Chicago history. Eddie & Jobo helped B96 dominate the music radio ratings in the 1980s and '90s.
• The duo became local celebrities off the air, too, perhaps most memorably as the longtime faces of United Auto Insurance.

Flashback: In 2014, Joe Colborn — aka Jobo — turned down an opportunity to reunite with Volkman on the air. Colborn died last year at age 70.

Zoom out: Radio has been hit particularly hard by cuts this year, with both iHeartMedia and Cumulus drastically reducing their staffs across the country.

Volkman says he's open to offers and has already heard from some Chicago stations about fill-in work.

• "I wasn't really doing it for the money, rather for the love of the game," Volkman tells Axios. "I won't be actively searching for anything, but I'm open to any offers. Retirement hasn't even crossed my mind."

The bottom line: Whether or not Volkman lands another regular gig, generations of Chicagoans grew up with Eddie on the radio.
