Aldi's blind box giveaway brings free grocery surprises

When I think about a "blind box" program, my mind usually goes to collectible toys, not groceries.
So I was a little confused and intrigued by Batavia-based Aldi's blind box promotion that starts Monday and runs through Friday.
How it works: Every day at 11am CT, the store will announce the day's blind box theme — snack, fiber, protein or mystery — on its website, opening the gates for the first 100 or so fans to claim a free box to be mailed to them.
- Aldi reps say it's aimed at turning "everyday grocery shopping into something a little less predictable."
Press preview: I got a "mystery" blind box press sample that I forgot to open for about five days until I finally did and yikes, dumb move with perishable stuff!
- The box held barbecue potato chips, jalapeño kettle chips, organic pasta sauce, probiotic soda, peanut butter cups, dark chocolate, pistachios, everything sourdough bread, cola, waffle cones, garlic naan, pasta, 1,000-day aged gouda and string cheese.
The bottom line: At a time of rising grocery prices, this promotion could offer Aldi shoppers some unexpected excitement and free food.
- I'll be donating all the non-perishables in the box to a local food pantry.
