The 2027 Chicago mayoral election is months away, but that isn't keeping potential challengers from hitting the campaign trail.
Why it matters: The election will be the first major referendum on Brandon Johnson's first term and could determine the direction of the city's economic, public safety and development policies.
The latest: Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza is the highest-profile candidate to formally enter the race.
- Others who have said they're running include U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, businessman Liam Stanton and former teacher and tech entrepreneur Joe Holberg.
- Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has been mum on his plans, but has been rumored to be kicking the tires on a run. He is up for reelection in November.
The issues: One issue already emerging as a central campaign theme is the economy.
- The downtown business community is seeking a candidate who can challenge Johnson following clashes with the mayor over progressive economic proposals, including a corporate head tax and an increase in the tipped wage.
- Last week, Holberg and Stanton campaigned on renegotiating the city's controversial 2008 parking meter deal. Now it seems that the council may pick up that cause, even as Mayor Johnson recently said the city's hands are tied.
- The Bears' future home is also likely to become a campaign issue. If the Bears ultimately leave Chicago, challengers blame Johnson, though Gov. JB Pritzker's role in botching the stadium financing discussion could complicate attacks by fellow Democrats.
Between the lines: It may be too early to assume this will be the final list of candidates. Other names that continue to generate speculation include Ald. Bill Conway, Ald. Andre Vasquez, businessman Willie Wilson, and former candidate Paul Vallas.
The intrigue: What about the current mayor? Johnson has stopped short of announcing a reelection bid — unusual for an incumbent mayor at this stage. Political observers expect a decision later this summer.
What's next: The municipal election is scheduled for Feb. 23, 2027. If no candidate wins a majority, the top two finishers will advance to a runoff on April 6.
