The first major sale of works by Chicago artist Tony Fitzpatrick since his death last year hits the auction market this month.
The big picture: Potter and Potter Auctions is selling 32 lots, some with multiple works, by Fitzpatrick on May 28.
- Other artists represented in the sale are Fitzpatrick's friends and influences, Potter and Potter curator Aron Packer tells Axios.
- "Outsider," or self-taught, artists like Howard Finster, Lee Godie and Bill Traylor are included, as well as Chicago Imagists Ed Paschke and Karl Wirsum.
State of play: The art comes primarily from one collector, who the auction house won't publicly name.
Zoom in: Fitzpatrick, a prolific artist who created multimedia collages, prints, paintings and drawings, died on Oct. 11 at the age of 66.
- Fitzpatrick, who was also a writer and performer, was collaborating with Steppenwolf Theatre on an adaptation of his book, "The Sun at the End of the Road: Dispatches from an American Life," before his death.
- He was a well-known presence in Wicker Park and Bucktown, running galleries in the neighborhoods and chatting up locals and visitors who passed by his studio.
What's next: The auction takes place live on May 28 at 10am at Potter and Potter Auctions at 5001 W. Belmont Ave. and online at the auction house's Website.
