Buddy Guy restarts talks on blues monument

• "But I don't see a picture of [anyone] that made Chicago what it is today — Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williams — I could go till tomorrow, but I'm not going to do that," Guy, 89, said. "But I'd like to see statues or something here to let the world know that Chicago is the world capital of the blues."

The response: Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez, who sponsored Guy's recent honor, tells Axios he's working on the request through both Chicago Public Schools and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE).

• The alder says he wants to see CPS create or revive a Chicago music history curriculum highlighting artists like Guy and demonstrating their links to history.

Monumental matters: "Buddy has spoken to the mayor directly [about a monument] and, as a personal friend of the family, I want to help out," Sigcho-Lopez says. "He wants people to learn about Chicago's contribution to blues and, of course, he's a big part of it."

• The alder says he's also been in talks with DCASE about a statue and hopes "to have a proposal ready to go by Buddy's 90th birthday in July."
