Black-owned brands take over H&M on Michigan Avenue

Black designers are getting the spotlight this weekend at Chicago's Michigan Avenue H&M.

The big picture: The Style Shop, Curated by Maison Black, is traveling to four U.S. cities and features some of the hottest fashion and housewares designers, including Chicago-based brands Confidence Apparel and Red Elephant Candle Co.

Maison Black is the e-commerce site platforming Black designers and companies from all over the U.S.

The intrigue: The iconic Chicago brand Fashion Fair cosmetics joins the Chicago roster.

Flashback: Eunice Johnson of the Johnson Publishing family launched Fashion Fair in 1973 as a beauty brand for Black women.

The cosmetics line was an offshoot of the Ebony Fashion Fair, the annual traveling fashion show that celebrated high fashion and raised millions for African American charities.

State of play: Desiree Rogers and Cheryl Mayberry McKissack purchased Fashion Fair from Ebony in 2019 and have been modernizing it for today's beauty world.
