Sausage roll stuns at Hawksmoor's new pub

Last week, Hawksmoor — the huge London steakhouse in the old Michael Jordan's building on LaSalle — opened a handsome British pub on its second floor serving novel (for Chicago) bar snacks including Welsh rarebit, Yorkshire sloppy Joes and schmaltz croutons, but one really blew me away.

The bite: The Beef & Liberty Bar sausage roll ($16) features juicy pastured pork sausage, tangy Cabot clothbound cheddar and flaky puff pastry baked to perfection and served with a St. John's brown sauce.

The verdict: In a town full of outstanding encased meats on bread, this hauntingly delicious roll ranks right near the top.

Full disclosure: I didn't dip into the brown sauce because it kinda reminded me of ketchup — and the roll was so freaking tasty without it.
