Chicago sports radio host Dan Bernstein is setting the record straight about his sudden firing at The Score earlier this year.
Driving the news: Bernstein, who has been sidelined since his March firing, debuted a new daily podcast called "Dan Bernstein: Unfiltered" on Monday and began telling his side of the story.
What they're saying: "It was my fault," Bernstein tells Axios. "I own my mistakes. This was the culmination of a slow, rolling mental health crisis."
- "I learned a lot in therapy, and I'm continuing to learn a lot about the dopamine outrage cycle and how real that is and how my brain chemistry works."
Flashback: He was first suspended and then fired after a social media fight over the size of a fish got ugly, with Bernstein apparently threatening to dox another X user's children.
Reality check: He didn't blame The Score for the firing, instead expressing gratitude for the opportunity for a mental health reset. He also said he won't be engaging on X anymore.
- "It does take more and more effort to build back boundaries and that is what I've worked so hard to do these past few months," Bernstein continued.
- "I think I'll be better served by the pace and tone of podcasting."
Context: The sports host started at The Score in 1995 and has been part of some of the most successful shows in Chicago sports radio history, including the "Boers and Bernstein" show, which ended when co-host Terry Boers retired in 2017.
- He's also hosted solo on the station.
What's next: Bernstein and co-host Matt Abbatacola are hosting the sports talk podcast on Hubbard Chicago's 312 Sports network.
