Dave Eanet, one of WGN Radio's most trusted voices, is retiring after more than 30 years anchoring morning sports reports.
Context: Eanet has anchored for various hosts, including Wally Phillips, Bob Collins, Spike O'Dell, John Williams, Gregg Jarrett, Johnny B., Steve Cochran and current morning host, Bob Sirott.
Flashback: Eanet first started at WGN Radio in 1984. He anchored sports in the morning and was part of the broadcast team that covered the 1985 Bears.
- He left in 1988 but returned in 1996 as sports director.
- Eanet was added to the WGN Radio Walk of Fame in 2015.
What they're saying: "I've always enjoyed working mornings," Eanet tells Axios. "I liked the idea of helping to wake up the city. I got used to the hours, but I won't miss setting the 4am alarm."
Zoom in: Eanet was a jack of all trades for WGN Radio, doing sports reports, hosting pre and post game shows and doing play-by-play, including his current gig as the radio voice of the Northwestern Wildcats football and basketball.
- The broadcaster will continue in that role after leaving WGN on Aug. 28. He will also continue to serve as a backup for WGN-TV sports broadcasts.
- "I have immense respect for Dave and admire his decision to scale back his morning show broadcast responsibilities," WGN Radio general manager Mary Sandberg Boyle said in a release.
- "It's his kindness as a broadcaster and coworker that really stand out."
The bottom line: Eanet enjoyed a tremendous career covering iconic moments in sports alongside some of the greats in Chicago broadcasting history.
What's next: Veteran sports broadcaster Andy Masur will take over for Eanet, anchoring weekday mornings for Sirott's show.
