Despite their boring name, serviceberries (aka Juneberries) might be the tastiest free local treat you've never eaten.
What's happening: You can learn more about them tonight at Middle Brow when author Bonnie Tawse launches her "Service Berry Cookbook" to teach folks how to enjoy these fruity local gems but also to benefit Friends of the 606 Bloomingdale Trail during its 10th anniversary.
Zoom in: Tawse offers 25 recipes (from jam to soup) for serviceberries, which grow all over the city, but especially on the 606.
What they're saying: "I hope the book inspires people to forage a small amount and make something of their own," Tawse tells Axios.
- "I also hope this book can help folks tune in to the seasonal nature of the serviceberry: the window for its ripe fruit is somewhat narrow, and so if you want to enjoy it, you need to pay attention."
