Take a breath — Real ID may not be urgent for you

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias wants everyone to take a deep breath to avoid Real ID panic.

Why it matters: While some people will need a Real ID starting May 7, Giannoulias says state facilities are seeing "unprecedented demand" from some who don't need the ID by that date.

The Secretary of State's website is flashing the catchy warning: "Don't rush the date. Real ID can wait."

Reality check: You need a Real ID before May 7 if you're over 18, flying domestically soon and don't have a passport — or if you have to enter a military base or a secure federal building.

Otherwise, getting it after that date is not a problem — DMVs will continue issuing them.

Between the lines: Giannoulias is combating some of the misinformation about the new ID with a breakdown of facts and myths.

How it works: The Secretary of State's Office has a handy quiz on its website to help you determine whether you need to get an ID before the deadline.

If the answer is "yes"— schedule an appointment at a DMV or find a walk-in facility.
The Real ID Supercenter is open 7:30am-5pm Monday-Friday and does not require appointments.

What's next: Some city and suburban DMVs will remain open on Saturdays through the end of May to accommodate Real ID appointments.
