When chef John Avila's Minahasa stall shut down at Revival Food Hall in 2023, Chicago lost its only brick-and-mortar Indonesian eating spot.
Why it matters: Avila is bringing the cuisine back this month with Rendang Republic located in a former Wrigleyville Harold's location at 3355 N. Clark St.
The basics: Rendang (pronounced like ron-DAHNG) refers to a long-simmered, spice-rich Indonesian stew.
- The sunny counter service restaurant offers stools against the wall and a few tables by the front window.
Dig in: Avila's beef rendang sandwich ($13), topped with giardiniera, fried shallots, cilantro and sambal aioli pays tribute to Italian beef but can also be made with jackfruit.
- Also, find Duck Inn hot dogs ($13), Indonesian fried chicken ($14), Indomie-seasoned fries ($5) and chubby Mama Betty's lumpia ($3), using an Indonesian spring roll recipe from Avila's mom.
- Rendang plates ($15) start with a base of rice, noodles or salad topped with proteins and garnishes of your choice.
Drink up: Volition teas ($6) and pandan and rendang-infused lattes ($7).
What's next: Avila's aiming for a March 30 soft opening, in plenty of time to feed hungry Cubs fans.
