Chicago City Council could vote on 25mph speed limit

Why it matters: Speed limits can save lives, yet also slow traffic times.

Zoom in: This is not an arbitrary, isolated idea. Other big cities like New York, Boston and Seattle have already made the change.

• Research has shown that at lower speeds, accidents are less likely to kill people. In the cities that changed their speed limits, traffic and pedestrian deaths dropped up to 20-25%.

Yes, but: Chicago has some of the worst traffic times in the world, so slowing down speeds could add to commuter times and cause drivers to rack up more tickets.

• And there is a cost to change all the signs, which has been estimated to be over $2 million.

Reality check: It's unclear whether Ald. Daniel La Spata's ordinance, which is supported by the mayor, will make it through the council.
