AMC taking over the ShowPlace Icon space in the South Loop

The latest: It will be called the AMC Roosevelt Collection 16 and is slated to open at the beginning of 2025.

What they're saying: "In recent years, AMC has made it a priority to strengthen our circuit by identifying popular and well-performing theatres in areas where we believe moviegoers are underserved," AMC's Dan Ellis said in a statement.

• "AMC Roosevelt Collection 16 is one of the most productive locations in the Chicagoland area and fits perfectly within that strategy."

The vibe: The theater will be similar but with more AMC amenities like power-recliner seating.

• You can also expect a full concession menu, as well as a bar concept, although the bar won't be ready by opening.

Context: The movie theater space is the anchor of the Roosevelt Collection Shops, which includes stores like H&M, The Container Store and Old Navy.

Reality check: The Showplace Icon had high-profile incidents, including a shooting right before it closed. It had also been targeted by large teen gatherings that stressed shops and businesses along Roosevelt Road.

Between the lines: Movie theaters have had a hard time rebounding since the pandemic. Audiences are down, and prices have surged.
