October was a rough month for Chicago's small-business community.
The big picture: Places that have decided to close up shop range from a well-known anchor in Logan Square to a kids shop in South Loop.
Why it matters: Many of these spots carry memories and meaning for our communities.
Here are a few of the closings announced in October:
We're still talking about a Revolution: Revolution Brewing's brewpub on Milwaukee Avenue announced it will shut its doors in December. The Logan Square anchor has been in business since 2010.
- This spot not only led the craft brewing explosion 15 years ago, but it also helped revitalize a stretch of Milwaukee.
Between the lines: All of the bars and restaurants up and down that stretch owe a bit of gratitude to Revolution for bringing beer and food lovers from around the world to this Northwest side corridor.
- The owners say the brewery on Kedzie will remain open.
Voila! My gelato disappeared: Sideshow Gelato busted on the scene last year as a fun place to get sweet treats with a side of magic. Originally bankrolled by magician Penn Jillette, Sideshow Gelato is calling it quits after just a year. The owner cites rising costs as the main culprit.
Stylish kids need a new spot: Kido owner Keewa Nurullah told Block Club she's ready for something new and will close the South Loop kids clothing, toy and book shop on Dec. 23. The store will still host holiday events while it unloads inventory.

Cupcake cravings be damned: The Gold Coast Sprinkles Cupcakes, which closed at the end of October, was known for its cupcake ATM, making sure you could fulfill that sweet tooth at any hour. The national chain also closed its ATMs at O'Hare but says shipping is still available.

Gone but not forgotten: The Gallery Bookstore on Belmont Avenue in Lakeview has closed, but not because of the rumored death of the owner. Rather, he's just retiring and closing the legendary book store.
Chain gang: Walgreens, Denny's and Wendy's all announced nationwide closures last month but have yet to specify which Chicago-area stores will shutter.
Other notable closures announced in the past month: Oooh Wee! It Is! (Chatham), Sticky Rice (North Center), Bar Cargo (River North), Taqueria Chingon (Bucktown), Borinken Cakes (Logan Square), Cafe by the River (Loop), Anna Maria Pasteria (Uptown), Honey Butter Fried Chicken (Glencoe), Michael Jordan's Steakhouse (Oakbrook), and Nights & Weekends (West Loop).
