A new club in Old Town is jumping in on the sauna and cold plunge trend.
Driving the news: Sweathouz (SWTHZ), located at 1439 N. Wells St., opened this week.
Why it matters: Proponents of the extreme heat to cold transition say it helps with muscle soreness by increasing blood flow, decreases inflammation and can boost dopamine for a few hours.
How it works: Guests sign up for a 30- or 60-minute session in a private suite equipped with an infrared sauna, a tub with 50-degree water and a shower infused with vitamin C.
- Most suites fit 1-2 people but larger spaces are available that can accommodate 4-5.
- Memberships range from $179-$500 and single sessions are available for $60.

Zoom out: Saunas and cold plunges have been around for several decades, especially at bath houses across Chicago, but in recent years they're popping up more in gyms and luxury spas.
- 11 minutes per week in the cold plunge at any temperature below 60 degrees is beneficial, SWTHZ Chicago owner Brent Curtis tells Axios.
The big picture: SWTHZ started in Atlanta in 2019 and has locations nationwide, with more expected locally in Lakeview, West Loop and suburban Naperville.
What they're saying: "I got into cold plunging about two years ago, primarily for mental health reasons as a new parent and wanting to just show up well for work and … my family," Curtis says. "After a cold plunge I feel ready to go, alert and calm."
Moyo's thought bubble: Prioritizing my health has always been important and with this studio just a train ride away, I think I'll be able to get more cold plunge practices in.
Carrie's thought bubble: I love to sweat in a hot sauna, especially in the winter, but the cold plunge was difficult for me. I think I lasted 15 seconds or less. I would have to build up my tolerance but can appreciate the benefits for post-workout recovery.
