Music Box Theatre is getting new seats for its 95th birthday

Driving the news: Beginning Monday, the main theater (the one with the organ) will be closed for renovations through Sept. 6, but films will still be screened in the smaller theater and outdoor patio.

State of play: As part of the theater's "Revive at 95" renovation project for its 95th anniversary, Music Box is replacing the approximately 700 seats in the auditorium, improving lighting, updating ADA accessibility and adding cup holders.

Flashback: Music Box Theatre opened in 1929 on Southport Avenue as a smaller option to the larger-capacity downtown movie houses. The theater retains its original ceiling, complete with twinkling lights to mimic a night sky.

• In the late '70s and early '80s, the theater showed Spanish-language movies and pornography, but in 1983 it started screening independent and international films.

By the numbers: The renovation is expected to cost $750,000 and take a month to complete.
