Taste Test: Beanless java delivers coffee flavor and jolt

Earlier this week, we told you about the Earth Day launch of Atomo beanless coffee at cafes nationwide, including Vigo in Lincoln Park.

Why it matters: The company says its java — made with upcycled date pits, millet, fenugreek, sunflower seeds, green tea, baking soda and lemon — is the "most sustainable" in the world.

I wondered if this blend of ingredients would really taste like coffee and deliver the promised two-espresso jolt of caffeine.

  • So I got an 8-ounce latte ($4) at Vigo.

The verdict: When paired with foamy milk, Atomo tastes like a caramelly, vegetal, lightly roasted java — and I'm still buzzing from the caffeine boost.
