White Castle is paying homage to the oldest continuously operating Castle in the Chicago area with free burgers on Tuesday.

The big picture: White Castle started slinging its mini hamburger patties in Whiting in 1935. Earlier this year, the Northwest Indiana city was inducted into the fast food company's Cravers Hall of Fame.

Driving the news: Anyone visiting the Whiting location between 8am and 8pm Tuesday will receive a free Original Slider sandwich.

  • Proceeds from T-shirts for sale will go to GiGi's Playhouse, a nonprofit that provides programs and support for individuals with Down syndrome.

Flashback: White Castle is considered the first fast food hamburger chain in the U.S., opening in 1921.

Fun fact: Whiting's White Castle was built to resemble, yes, a small castle, and was inspired by Chicago's Water Tower.

  • The building was torn down and replaced with a larger and more modern version that opened last year.
