After Axios reader Edwin E. told us about a version of Chicago 16-inch softball where a keg is placed at second base, we were skeptical.
- But then we heard from John Freyer of Palos Park, who confirmed this strange twist on the sport as "an incentive to get on base."
What he's saying: "I have played in several tournaments, summer and winter, where a keg was positioned at third base so it wouldn't interfere with the game."
- "I’ve also played in charity games where there was a keg at every base."
- Freyer's softball motto: "16-inch softball — the only sport where you play for 45 minutes and drink beer for five hours afterward."
Driving the news: The Chicago-media league softball season starts Monday, and the Axios team may have just discovered a way to distract our opponents.
