Patriots pick Brissett as starter while fans wait for Maye's debut

Driving the news: New head coach Jerod Mayo reportedly told the team Thursday that veteran Jacoby Brissett will start at QB in Week 1 against the Bengals.

• Mayo previously said that Maye had outplayed Brissett so far. But he also stressed the value of Brissett's eight seasons of NFL experience.

Between the lines: Concerns about New England's shaky offensive line — and Maye's work-in-progress footwork and timing — also likely played a factor.

The intrigue: Buzz is building for another rookie: wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk, a second-round pick who's been making plays throughout training camp and the preseason.

• Unlike Maye, he's likely to play right away and, with weak competition at the position, could be the Pats' No. 1 receiver by midseason.

Meet the new boss: Of course, the most jarring sight for many fans on Sundays will be the absence of Bill Belichick scowling on the sidelines in his hoodie.

• Former Cleveland assistant Alex Van Pelt is the new offensive coordinator. DeMarcus Covington was promoted internally to run the defense.

Setting expectations: The Pats finished last in the AFC East last season, with just four wins, and Las Vegas oddsmakers predict a repeat.
