Questions linger after man falls to death from Six Flags roller coaster

• In a press release Tuesday, Cobb police said a preliminary investigation indicates Kariem was ejected from the coaster and hit other visitors before he landed beneath the ride.
• Atlanta Public Schools said Kariem worked at Wesley International Academy and was a "cherished" member of the school and school system.

Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John King, whose office oversees amusement parks, is also investigating, 11 Alive reports.

What they're saying: In a statement to Axios, Six Flags Over Georgia expressed condolences to Kariem's family and friends.

• "The park team and local authorities responded immediately, and we cooperated fully with local authorities," it said. "Out of respect for the family's privacy, we will not be sharing additional details at this time."

Zoom in: Unveiled in 2006, Goliath is classified as a hypercoaster that climbs a maximum of 200 feet and reaches up to 70mph, according to the park's website.

• Goliath's maker, Bolliger & Mabillard, told Axios' Nathan Bomey in a statement that the company is "actively investigating the incident and will not comment further until we have a better understanding of what happened."

State of play: Six Flags has temporarily closed nine coasters similar to Goliath at six of its parks across the country, including Fury 325 and Thunder Striker at Carowinds, Axios' Alexandria Sands reports.

Zoom out: Six Flags has been under a microscope since CNN published an investigation in August that found "documented reports of serious injuries and deaths associated with" the X2 ride at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California.

• The company announced late last month that it would permanently close the X2.

The big picture: Monday's incident heightens public scrutiny over ride safety at a time when regional amusement parks are already under mounting competitive pressure.

Flashback: Six Flags Over Georgia opened on June 16, 1967, in south Cobb and has more than 40 rides and attractions.
