Cobb, Gwinnett voters reject transit and mobility taxes

The latest: Cobb voters rejected the proposed M-SPLOST, with 62% opposing the question on the ballot.

• A majority of Gwinnett voters — about 54% — voted down that county's proposed transit SPLOST referendum.

Zoom in: Cobb's tax would have raised $14.5 billion over 30 years. Proposed projects included 73 miles of bus rapid transit routes, including service to Midtown and west Atlanta MARTA stops, on-demand rides and more.

• $1 billion would have been earmarked for trails, sidewalks and other "transit-supportive" projects.
• Gwinnett's plan called for bus rapid transit routes serving the county's major cities, new transit facilities and a shuttle to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
• The tax would have generated $12.4 billion over three decades, officials said.

The other side: Opponents in both counties distributed yard signs urging "no" votes and blasted the proposal during public comments.

• They argued that the projects in the fast-growing counties — Cobb will be home to 914,000 people in 2050, according to county officials — were too expensive for too little benefit.
