MomoCon 2024 photos: Cosplay, gaming and more

Atlanta transformed into the epicenter of geek society during Memorial Day weekend since more than 50,000 people dressed as characters from anime, comics, and everything else in pop culture filled the Georgia World Congress Center for MomoCon.

Why it matters: MomoCon's economic impact on metro Atlanta is expected to be nearly $35 million as attendees visited town from all 50 states and several other countries, according to event organizers.

  • Money aside, it's also a great opportunity for people to connect over their shared interest in everything from Dragon Ball to "The Walking Dead."

Context: "Momo" is Japanese for "Peach," and Georgia is called the Peach State, hence the convention's namesake.

  • The convention originated at Georgia Tech before it blossomed into the global sensation we know and love today.

Check out some of my favorite moments from MomoCon.

Two movie theater-sized screens displaying two different video games dominate the exhibition hall.
I wanted to play Super Smash Brothers, but video game tournaments are serious business. Photo: Wil Nobles/Axios
A cosplayer dressed as a large fox character known as "Eevee" from the Pokemon franchise.
Hold up. Is this the same Eevee from the Atlanta Comic Con?! Photo: Wil Nobles/Axios
Several attendees participate in virtual reality video gaming in an exhibition hall.
It looks silly, but virtual reality video gaming is a blast. I played Resident Evil Village VR for an hour until I was surrounded by werewolves during the gameplay. Photo: Wil Nobles/Axios

MomoCon attendees galore throughout the merchandise exhibition hall.

Two cosplayers dressed as wookiee and Jedi characters from the "Star Wars" franchise.
OK, hear me out. They're obviously cosplaying as a wookiee and Jedi from the "Star Wars" franchise, but I don't think they're supposed to be Chewbacca and Anakin Skywalker. Correct me, fandom! Photo: Wil Nobles/Axios
Several cars detailed with anime characters fill an exhibition hall.
This is just a sample of the dozens of anime-detailed cars that were on display. Photo: Wil Nobles/Axios
A live-action droid character.
This live-action droid gave me flashbacks to the time a mouse droid chased me around the hall in February. Anyway, Star Wars fandom, please help me identify this fella. Photo: Wil Nobles/Axios
A merchandise setup displaying fake weapons associated with cosplay costumes.
Guns? Swords? Shields? No cosplay convention is complete without weapons, but this merchandise setup has you covered. Photo: Wil Nobles/Axios
A merchandise setup displaying Funko Pop collectibles, aka vinyl figurines of characters.
Speaking of merch, MomoCon had a smorgasbord of Funko Pop collectibles, aka vinyl figurines of characters from pop culture. Photo: Wil Nobles/Axios
A life-sized model of the DeLorean time machine car from the "Back to the Future" franchise.

A cosplayer covered in soft plush stuffed animals, specifically Pikachu from the Pokemon franchise.
It just hit me. I think this cosplay is a play on the Pigeon Lady from the "Home Alone 2" movie. But with Pikachu! Photo: Wil Nobles/Axios
Women dressed as characters from the "Sailor Moon" franchise.
These cosplayers are rocking the sailor scout uniforms from the "Sailor Moon" franchise.
Cosplayer merged the uniforms of Marvel's Moon Knight and the Star Wars Mandalorian characters.
Props to this guy. His cosplay combined the uniforms from Marvel's Moon Knight character with the Mandalorian character from Star Wars. Photo: Wil Nobles/Axios
Two cosplayers dressed as the members of the music group Daft Punk.
I'm assuming these aren't the actual members of the music group Daft Punk. Otherwise, I missed out on an autograph. Photo: Wil Nobles/Axios

That's all, folks! MomoCon was amazing. I encourage you to check it out with your family and friends. Photo: Wil Nobles/Axios
