Atlanta transformed into the epicenter of geek society during Memorial Day weekend since more than 50,000 people dressed as characters from anime, comics, and everything else in pop culture filled the Georgia World Congress Center for MomoCon.
Why it matters: MomoCon's economic impact on metro Atlanta is expected to be nearly $35 million as attendees visited town from all 50 states and several other countries, according to event organizers.
- Money aside, it's also a great opportunity for people to connect over their shared interest in everything from Dragon Ball to "The Walking Dead."
Context: "Momo" is Japanese for "Peach," and Georgia is called the Peach State, hence the convention's namesake.
- The convention originated at Georgia Tech before it blossomed into the global sensation we know and love today.
