Seattle pledges communication overhaul after Bite shooting

The latest: Going forward, the city will update the media within one hour of a significant incident "when it's safe and possible to do so," Mayor Katie Wilson's office said in a press release this week.

• Not using the city's official emergency alert system, AlertSeattle, after the shooting was also a mistake, the mayor told KUOW.

What they're saying: "The public deserves clear, fast communication during emergencies," Wilson told the radio station this week.

• "We recognize that we fell short of that during the Bite of Seattle tragedy, and we are fixing it."

Catch up quick: Wilson previously said "communication failures within SPD" and "communication failures between SPD and my office" occurred the night of the shooting.

• She asked then-police chief Shon Barnes to resign that same week, telling reporters that events surrounding the shooting played a role in her decision.

• Three people were killed that day at the food festival at Seattle Center, while four others were wounded.

Zoom in: During future emergencies, the mayor said, the police chief will update her or her public safety director, The Seattle Times reported.

• Before major events, the mayor's office and police department will also brief each other on who will handle communications on both sides, the newspaper reported.

What's next: An inspector general's report on the flow of public information following the shooting is expected to be released later this fall.
