Washington schools start later than in most of the U.S.

Even without the threat of a strike delaying the start of school in Seattle, classes here will begin later than in most of the country.
Zoom in: Fewer than 1% of schools in Washington started before Aug. 16 this year, compared with nearly half of schools nationally, according to MDR Education, a data company.
- Almost half — 46% — of Washington schools won't start until after Aug. 31.
- Nationwide, fewer than 16% of schools are starting that late.
State of play: Seattle's scheduled school start date this year is Wednesday, Sept. 2.
- But even that date is now in question after contract talks between Seattle Public Schools and its teachers union broke down over the weekend.
- The union voted to authorize a strike last week, which could lead to a walkout that postpones classes.
