Seattle to pay ex-police chief Shon Barnes nearly $600K

By the numbers: Barnes will receive about $560,000, the equivalent of 18 months' salary, under his resignation agreement with the city. He was making about $373,000 per year before.

• He'll also receive $30,300 for a year of COBRA health insurance coverage for him and his family.
• Barnes won't have to repay a $50,000 lateral hiring bonus or a $60,000 relocation benefit he received when he came to Seattle.

Flashback: Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson confirmed Friday that she asked Barnes to resign.

• At a Friday news conference, she was critical of the Seattle Police Department's handling of public updates following the July 26 Bite of Seattle shooting, saying key information "should have been shared earlier."
• Wilson said she'll be looking for a police chief who is "consistently present in Seattle" and can navigate the criticism that comes with the job.

• Barnes was attending an out-of-town conference when the shooting occurred and had also faced scrutiny over frequent travel to visit his family in Chicago.

The other side: Barnes, in an open letter published Friday, said he was proud of what he accomplished in Seattle, while rejecting what he called "false narratives about my commitment to this city."

What's next: Wilson says she's launching a search for Barnes' permanent replacement, after appointing Andre Sayles as interim chief.
