Kids don't need to settle for gazing longingly at Seattle fire stations from the sidewalk. With a little planning, you can get them inside for a tour.
How it works: You can submit an online form requesting a fire station tour for up to 25 people.
Forms must be submitted at least three weeks in advance, but no more than three months before your preferred tour date.
At least one adult chaperone must be present for every five children. Children must be at least 3 years old.
What to expect: Tours typically last 20-30 minutes and include a chance to see the fire engine and equipment, talk with firefighters, and get fire safety tips.
Caveats: Firefighters won't let you have birthday parties at the fire station. And if an emergency comes up, they may need to cut the tour short.
But it's a good opportunity for kids (like mine) who could happily stare through fire station windows for hours.
Special shoutout to the team at Seattle Fire Station 6, who recently spotted my fire-truck-obsessed 2-year-old watching from outside and surprised him by letting him hop on a rig.
