Amazon has been dethroned as Seattle's biggest employer, with its workforce falling below 50,000 citywide, The Seattle Times reports.
The big picture: The tech giant's recent job cuts mark a sharp pullback from its rapid 2010s expansion, which transformed the city while also reshaping the global economy.
State of play: Amazon now employs fewer people in Seattle than the University of Washington, which is the city's largest employer and has more than 50,000 employees, the Times reports.
Amazon has shed about 1 million square feet of office space in Seattle since 2020, vacating at least six office buildings near its headquarters, according to the newspaper.
What we're watching: Whether the company continues to grow its presence in Bellevue, where it employs more than 14,000 people, according to the latest city estimates.
