Seattle is headed for a record-dry January stretch

• So far this month, Sea-Tac Airport has recorded about 3.3 inches of rain — well below the January average of just over 5.5 inches.
• Most of that fell during the first week of the month, with little added since.
• Temperatures have also been unusually mild overall, said Cullen, despite a few chillier nights over the last few days when overnight lows dipped to the upper 20s.

The intrigue: A temperature inversion — when warmer air sits above colder air near the ground — is trapping moisture at the surface, allowing fog to form overnight and linger until warmer temperatures break it up, said Cullen.

What's next: Looking ahead, the high-pressure ridge is expected to keep the region mostly dry through at least the middle of next week.
