Washington ranks among the top U.S. states for per-capita AI use, according to a new report from AI company Anthropic.
The big picture: The data suggests Washingtonians are embracing artificial intelligence — not just for tech jobs but across daily life.
Driving the news: Washington's use of Claude — Anthropic's AI platform — is 1.51 times higher than expected, based on the state's percentage of the nation's working-age population, the report found.
- Among states, only Utah, California, New York and Virginia ranked higher for AI usage (although Washington, D.C., came in first).
Zoom in: The tech industry's impact on Washington's AI usage is clear, with debugging and fixing software code errors the most common use for Claude's platform statewide, per the report.
Yes, but: Washington residents were 1.5 times more likely than those elsewhere to use the tool for job searches and career advancement help.
- We were also 1.3 times more likely to use the platform to help with consumer research of products before buying them.
- Other uses of the platform that were more common in Washington than elsewhere included travel planning, cooking and meal planning, and financial planning.
Between the lines: AI is also making inroads in government.
- A recent report from Cascade PBS and KNKX showed that city officials in Washington are using OpenAI's platform, ChatGPT, to help with tasks like responding to constituent emails, generating application materials for grants and writing politicians' speeches.
What's next: Expect AI to keep spreading from coding desks to kitchen tables, shaping decisions beyond Washington's tech core.
