A brief history of Seattle's J&M Cafe

About a half dozen of you correctly identified where we were when we snapped last week's mystery photo: We were standing across from the former J&M Cafe & Cardroom, on the corner of First Avenue and Washington Street in Pioneer Square.

Catch up quick: The saloon closed a few years ago, but previously was one of three bars that claimed to be the oldest in Seattle.

• It was known for live music shows and also served as a backdrop in John Wayne's 1974 cop film, "McQ."
• The 1992 film "Singles" prominently featured the brick wall with the cafe's signature mural — although the adjacent newsstand in the film didn't exist in real life.

What we're watching: An investor bought the building earlier this year with plans to restore it.
