Father still at large 1 month after daughters' deaths

Catch up quick: The bodies of Decker's daughters — Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5 — were found at a campsite near Leavenworth on June 2, three days after he failed to return them to their mother at the end of a scheduled visit.

• The girls' mother, Whitney Decker, reported them missing on May 30, telling police she feared for their safety due to what she called their father's mental health struggles, the New York Times reported.
• Decker has been charged with three counts of aggravated first-degree murder in Chelan County Superior Court.

The big picture: After the Decker sisters' deaths, the Seattle Times reported that Rep. Amy Walen (D-Kirkland) said lawmakers have a "solemn responsibility to face the question" of how current judicial and law enforcement systems may have failed to protect the children.

State of play: Decker, a former Army soldier, had recently searched online for ways to get to Canada and is believed to be able to survive off the land.
