Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei is recovering at home after a head and neck injury led to him being taken off the field in an ambulance on Sunday.

Why it matters: The 39-year-old is a cornerstone of the Sounders' defense and his absence could hurt the club's playoff hopes in a tight Western Conference race.

What happened: Frei was kneed in the head during a collision with Columbus Crew midfielder Amar Sejdic, according to Sounder at Heart.

Frei was conscious and moving when taken off Lumen Field, per the Sounders.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw game after both coaches urged officials to call the game, Reuters reports.

What they're saying: "What resonates is all the messages, calls, and love I've received from so many of you," Frei said on Instagram. "Thank you — truly.... It means more than I can put into words."

What's next: So far, there is no official word on when Frei could be back on the field.
