I finally got a chance to try The Shorehouse Coffee & Shaved Ice in the Central District — and, after just a few visits, it's becoming one of my favorite places in the neighborhood.
What to expect: The walk-up spot on Cherry Street makes an especially balanced Americano, making it a go-to stop for me on morning walks. (They use beans from Lighthouse Roasters in Fremont.)
- The shop, which opened in January, also offers pastries and breakfast sandwiches.
Yes, but: I wasn't prepared for the softness and subtlety of the shaved ice.
- It's far more enjoyable than a snowcone, with a softer texture that better absorbs the flavored syrups, most of which are made in house.
- I tried one with a dual-punch of watermelon and mango one day, and on my next visit got guava and passionfruit with a drizzle of condensed milk on top.
- If you're looking for a different type of frozen treat, they sell chocolate covered bananas as well.
If you go: The current sidewalk tables are great for summer people-watching. The owners plan to add indoor seating soon.
Stop by: 2340 East Cherry (near Garfield High School).
- Current hours are 6:30am-5pm Monday through Thursday; 6:30am-6:30pm on Fridays; 7am-6:30pm Saturday; and 7am-5pm Sunday.
- The owners hope to shift to daily hours of 6:30am to 7pm sometime in the next month.
