Washington and 14 other states are challenging President Trump's Jan. 20 declaration of a "national energy emergency," which they say the administration has used to illegally bypass important environmental reviews on energy projects.
Zoom in: The states' lawsuit — filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Seattle — asks a judge to declare Trump's emergency declaration unlawful.
It also asks the court to block the administration from issuing emergency permits to fast-track energy projects, including for fossil fuel infrastructure.
The big picture: This is the 17th lawsuit that Washington state has spearheaded or joined against the Trump administration since January.
