Mariners kick off 2025 season with playoff hopes in sight

Baseball is back and so are the Mariners, ready to bring the buzz and maybe even a playoff run to the Emerald City.

Driving the news: The Seattle Mariners are set to open their 2025 season with a four-game home series against the Oakland Athletics, starting Thursday at 7:10pm at T-Mobile Park.

Why it matters: Seattle is due for a postseason run, having only made the playoffs once since 2001.

State of play: After finishing the 2024 season with an 85-77 record and missing the playoffs, the Mariners are in a surprisingly good position to make a strong showing in their division, according to Mariners news outlet Sodo Mojo.

As of Wednesday afternoon, FanGraphs gave the Mariners a 36.1% chance to win the American League West, ahead of the Astros (28.6%) and Rangers (27.6%).

Zoom in: The M's have one of the most promising pitching rotations in baseball, plus all-star centerfielder Julio Rodríguez, who's entering his fourth year with the team after a strong spring season.

The team has also bolstered its outfield unit over the past year by adding Randy Arozarena and Víctor Robles.

The bottom line: Seattle is used to heartbreak on the playing fields, but the Mariners hype feels real this year and we're ready to believe.
