Seattle's 5pm sunsets start now

By the numbers: On the shortest day of the year, around Dec. 21, Seattle has just 8 hours and 25 minutes of daylight, with the sun setting at 4:20pm.

• The city will have gained about 50 minutes of daylight, with sunset at 5:01pm, by Jan. 25.
• Daylight increases by roughly 2-3.5 minutes daily as Seattle heads toward spring.

The big picture: Seattle's evenings will keep getting longer until summer solstice on June 20, when the city will enjoy nearly 16 hours of daylight.
