How the Seattle City Council plans to replace Tammy Morales

• The position is open because Councilmember Tammy Morales recently announced that she is resigning, effective Jan. 6.

How it works: To apply for the open job, you'll need to submit a resume, cover letter, and completed statement of financial interest to the city clerk's office.

• Applicants must be U.S. citizens, registered voters in Seattle, and residents of District 2 for at least the past 120 days, council spokesperson Brad Harwood told Axios.
• District 2 includes Beacon Hill, the Chinatown-International District, Columbia City, Rainier Beach, and other neighborhoods in South Seattle. 
• Whoever is appointed by the council will serve in the role for less than a year, unless they run for the position in the November 2025 election and win.

What's next: More details, including links to application forms, will become available online closer to the application deadline, Harwood said.

• A public forum to interview candidates is expected on or around Jan. 21.
• The council plans to vote on a replacement for Morales during a special meeting on Jan. 27.
