Washingtonians volunteer at a higher rate than the national average — and lately, we're giving back even more.
By the numbers: An estimated 32.8% of Washington residents engaged in formal volunteering at least once from September 2022 to September 2023, per a new AmeriCorps report.
Nationwide, 28.3% of people volunteered during the same period, according to the report, which is based on survey data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Zoom in: After dipping during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans' volunteering rate increased by about 5 percentage points from 2021 to 2023.
Washington's rate of volunteering increased even more, rising nearly 8 percentage points.
The share of Washington residents who donated to charity also rose 2 percentage points from 2021 to 2023, compared with an increase of 0.4 percentage points nationwide.
