How to see Seattle's migratory birds

What we're watching: While sparrows and ducks may not be the most exotic of birds, they are abundant, and their many species offer plenty of opportunities for birdwatchers to discover subtle differences and unique behaviors, Bartanen told Axios.

• Sometimes generically called "little brown birds," fox sparrows, golden-crowned sparrows and white-throated sparrows are among the easiest to spot.
• "They might all look the same at first, but learning to identify them can be really rewarding," she says.
• PNW waterfowl, such as ducks, geese and other water-loving birds, are fun to watch as they forage and socialize close to shore, offering an entertaining glimpse into their daily routines.

Zoom in: Mixed flocks are another thing to watch for, says Bartanen, with various species, such as kinglets and black-capped chickadees banding together to forage. Reports of the elusive varied thrush, known for its haunting single-note song, add to the season's allure.

Fun fact: During fall, birds often make territory defense calls and sound alarms to warn of nearby predators, but the milder weather the Emerald City experienced earlier this month combined with a light-dark balance similar to spring, can trick birds into singing as though mating season were here.
