Once you start thinking about flags and learning about what makes them good or bad, it's hard to stop.
👋 Clarridge here. Like many people, I never really gave city flags much thought, until I watched a TED Talk on them and started looking around and talking to flag experts.
As with Seattle, Washington state does not have a great flag, say vexillologists.
The state flag's fundamental problem, according to Kaye of the North American Vexillological Association, is that it has a seal.
"They don't belong on flags because they can't be made out at a distance," he told Axios. "They were meant to be on a piece of paper 16 inches from your eyes."
Lockhart, the flag designer, has created a proposed redesign for Washington's flag that ditches the seal for a geometric mountain range. (See above.)
Reddit threads are full of ideas for new Seattle, Cascadia and Washington state flags, including this one for Seattle that uses Chief Sealth's profile in a bolder fashion than the current design.
