The percentage of Seattle-area residents living in poverty has crept up in recent years, although it remains below the state and national average.
By the numbers: 9% of residents in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area lived below the poverty line in 2023, compared to 7.8% in 2019, per census data released last week.
Nationally in 2023, the official poverty rate was 11.1% — a 0.4% decline from the year before.
Context: The Census Bureau considered someone below the poverty line in December 2023 if they made less than roughly $15,800 as an individual, or under about $31,000 as a family with two adults and two children.
