By the numbers: Among those treated at Harborview in 2023, 40% sustained injuries to the eyes, face and head and 45% underwent amputation, KUOW reported.
What they're saying: "Human-caused wildfires and fireworks injuries are fully preventable," said Jennifer Hawton, a spokesperson for Seattle-based Pemco insurance.
What to do: Prepare your home for wildfire season in general by creating a buffer zone, said Hawton.
Remove leaves from gutters and clear fuel such as dry grass, brush, low-hanging branches and firewood from the perimeter of the house.
Hose down your roof and yard if you or neighbors are lighting fireworks, Hawton told Axios.
To prevent injuries, never light more than one firework at a time, keep a hose or bucket of water at the ready, wear eye protection, douse duds immediately and don't give kids sparklers, she said.
