Southern Utah pushing for last-minute trips as weak tourism season nears end

If you want a cheap staycation in southern Utah, businesses there are still sweeping their welcome mats and offering deals in the aftermath of wildfires that hobbled the tourism industry this summer.
The big picture: Visitors bureaus are still trying to talk tourists out of their weather and wildfire fears.
- "Capitol Reef Country Remains Unaffected By Wildfires & Welcomes Visitors With Blue Skies," reads one press release last week from a Torrey-area tourism office.
- Moab rafting outfitters this week were inviting Utahns to plan an end-of-summer whitewater trip despite low water levels.
Follow the money: At Bryce Canyon, Ruby's Inn announced 20% discounts for part of August as part of its push to entice SLC-based visitors to seek cooler temps at higher altitudes.
- Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort, already 25% discounted through August, on Thursday announced a free bonus night with 3-night bookings for the rest of the year.
The bottom line: Utahns may not be able to replace all of the missing out-of-towners — but we can save some pennies in their absence.
